Decoding Activities
Decoding can be fun! This is a great activity for a long car ride or to intersperse throughout the day. Tell your child a work and have them break the word up into sounds (also called phonemes). Start small and work your way up. You child might need to focus on one vowel sound at a time and that is okay! Use manipulatives around the house or where you are such as rocks, seashells, or blueberries. This activity is also useful and entertaining to use with non-sense words such as "mab". Here are some word ideas to get your brain going: 3 sound words mop, keep, card, mom, light, hurray 4 sound words stop, crash, laughs, silly, water, task 5 sound words stomp, thunder, flashy, strike, flames, birthday 6 sound words backpack, cupcake, sprint, strength, scrunch, football Remember : this activity is about breaking up SOUNDS not letters.
